Creating A Garden Stream

We know that the garden is an integral part of your home. And of course, you want to have a garden that looks good to complement your home. But what if you have an unused area in your yard that does not seem to be useful for planting? Would you just leave it as it is or would you make an effort to make it appealing in one way or another?

I hope you have chosen the second option as this post is about that. One way you can turn that unused patch of land into something good is by making a dry streambed. What you will need are shovels, rope or garden hose, permeable landscape fabric, river stones, rough rocks, pebbles, flat stones, and boulders.

Start with using the rope or hose to create the outline of the stream. The size and the twists of the stream are up to you. Then, dig up the soil to about 6 to 8 inches. You can use the soil to fill up low spots in your yard. Also, bear in mind that the stream should run downhill as you want it to carry water "downstream" during heavy rains.

Now, use the permeable landscape fabric to cover the area you have just dug up. Use stones to anchor the fabric. Make sure that the fabric follows the twists and turns of the stream and that it shows the edges. After that, you are ready to pour the stones into the stream. If you want your streambed to look as if it dried up long ago, you can use rough stones. Or you can use smooth stones which I would recommend to make your streambed look as if it has been active recently.

So, that’s basically it. A good way to put those neglected part of the yard to good use.
