No Simple Task

Improving a home to look like the ones we see in television is not really easy. First, you have to know what you are doing and you have to have a lot of patience as it is not something that you can easily finish in a matter of minutes. In fact, to get your room looking like the way you want it to be, you would be kind of fine tuning it after you are done.

Another challenge that you would likely face is picking out the right furniture and fixtures for your home. You must consider of course your tastes as well as the preferences of the people you are sharing your home with, in short, your family. So ,the larger your family is, the wider the diversity of preferences. That would translate to more time picking out the right furniture for your home like wholesale candle holders for example.

Then, there is the matter of money. Of course, you would have to spend some amount of money so that you can furnish your home with things that you and your loved one like. Even if you can create some masterpieces on your own without spending much, you have to watch how much money you spend on decorating your home.

It’s not all that bad though. Because at the end of the day, when you’re done and your home looks ready to conquer hgtv, it would really be a gratifying reward.

Country Style

Have you ever noticed how friendly a home is if it is country-themed. I guess it’s the laid back attitude which we associate with country living which makes country-themed homes look very appealing.

With the atmosphere that the country theme exudes, it is not surprising that many homeowners would like to have their home sporting a country theme. And it is really easy to have a country-themed home although not as easy as picking out an accent chair. According to Rental Decorating, here are a few things that you can display in your home to give it a country theme:

  • Cookbooks
  • Wooden spoons
  • Bowls or baskets of fruits or vegetables
  • Vases of fresh flowers
  • Pottery
  • Old tin canister

Another tip to create a country themed home is to use pot racks where you can hang "copper pots, baskets, and dried herbs". All those are associated with country living and they do not cost very much. In the bathroom, you can use old glass jars, you know, the ones that you can remember being used by your grandma while you were still young. They can easily turn a modern bathroom into a country themed one. Of course, you must also add other country themed home accent pieces.

Here are other things that will not look out of place in a country-themed home:

  • Knickknacks
  • Candles
  • Potpourri
  • Beautiful handmade quilts
  • Throw pillows
  • Rugs
  • Flowers, and
  • Plants

Garden Indoors

If you live in a home with no place for gardening yet you would love to have plants of your own to look after despair not as you can grow a garden inside your home.  But before you try planting anything inside your home, I would like to share with you some pointers I have picked up along the way.

For containers, indoor herbs are known to grow well on small to medium pots. You can use terracotta post which is more stylish than ordinary pots but will like cost you more.  Glazed pots can also be used especially if you want to flaunt the pots along with your furniture and fixtures.  If you are more adventurous you can try hanging baskets but it would be tricky when it comes to drainage.

Speaking of drainage, it is important that you plant your indoor herbs on pots with good drainage. If the pot retains too much water, the roots soaking in water will result in the herb not growing at all or just dying.

There are herbs out there that can grow healthy inside your home. For these plants, make sure that they receive plenty of light.  Also, remember that you should keep these plants away from places with fluctuating temperature like near a stove or a hearth even if it has a stained glass fireplace screen or a window during winter.

So there you are, just some pointers to help you out on that indoor garden you are planning.

Bathroom Color

Try as I might, I would never have all the answers for different home improvement topics. So I use my spare time to learn something new.  Of course, books are great sources of information and so does the World Wide Web.

Recently, I found this article about decorating bathrooms. It’s all about the different combination of colors to make your bathroom more appealing.  So here are some tips from said article:

  • Search for inspiration, from your favorite linen dress or piece of art to nature’s beauty. Worn pebbles or the inside of a shell can be a simple starting point for a beautiful soft bathroom color palette.
  • Whatever color you choose for wall paint, don’t go too matchy-matchy with the accessories. Towels and decorative pieces in a shade lighter or darker than the walls will offer more visual variety.
  • Consider the reflectivity of the colors surrounding the mirrored vanity area. When you apply makeup, you’re likely to compensate for the colors being thrown on your face, whether they are strong or weak.
  • Remember that color changes color. In white-beige combos, for example, the white can look "dirty." Combine a mixed color, such as mauve (which is pink with blue undertones), with blue and the mauve will be distinctly bluer than if you combined it with yellow.

I hope those tips can help you make your own bathroom look better.

Consider Bamboo

If you are conscious about the increasing threat of global warming then I am sure that you want to make your home as eco-friendly as possible. After all, each of us can help protect the environment in our own way. If you are serious about this, then, how about using bamboo for floorings?

Not sold on the idea that using bamboo for floorings? Well, you should first hear out the advantages of using said material. For one, it is easier to grow bamboo than hardwood. In Asian countries, bamboo grows abundantly and they grow easily. So even if the demand increases, the supply will not waver.

The leftover leaves of the bamboo are used as food for livestock in the United States and in Asia. That fact is enough for conservationist to embrace the use of bamboo.

When it comes to aesthetic, bamboo flooring has an advantage over hardwood too. For one, it has a better resiliency than say pine or vinyl flooring surfaces. It is also of high strength despite its rapid growth rate. What that means is that you can use this for high traffic areas and it can give you years and years of service.

As for cost; bamboo flooring’s price varies greatly depending on its quality of course. But you can save a lot using bamboo as it offers the option of installing it by yourself.

Collection Tips

Whatever your collection is, I’m sure you want it to receive as much attention as possible. Of curse, you want people to appreciate your collection as much as you do. So, you should put some effort on displaying it.

I am no expert at this but I want to share with you some tips I got from my friends who collects anything from rare china to matchbooks. If you have a collection, you should display it in a way that it is the center of attention. That means the cabinet or anything that you will display it on should not be more emphasized than your collection.

The way your collection contrast its background is an indication of how visible it is. Another thing that you should consider if you want to use curtains to frame your collection is that you should avoid patterned fabric. This is because the curtains can draw attention away from your collection.

It would also be a good idea if you pick a centerpiece for your collection. A beautiful centerpiece centered on a display case can attract the attention of anyone therefore creating a halo effect where onlookers will give attention to other items in your collection. To make your collection look presentable, group items with the same characteristics. This gives your collection a balanced look.

Creating A Garden Stream

We know that the garden is an integral part of your home. And of course, you want to have a garden that looks good to complement your home. But what if you have an unused area in your yard that does not seem to be useful for planting? Would you just leave it as it is or would you make an effort to make it appealing in one way or another?

I hope you have chosen the second option as this post is about that. One way you can turn that unused patch of land into something good is by making a dry streambed. What you will need are shovels, rope or garden hose, permeable landscape fabric, river stones, rough rocks, pebbles, flat stones, and boulders.

Start with using the rope or hose to create the outline of the stream. The size and the twists of the stream are up to you. Then, dig up the soil to about 6 to 8 inches. You can use the soil to fill up low spots in your yard. Also, bear in mind that the stream should run downhill as you want it to carry water "downstream" during heavy rains.

Now, use the permeable landscape fabric to cover the area you have just dug up. Use stones to anchor the fabric. Make sure that the fabric follows the twists and turns of the stream and that it shows the edges. After that, you are ready to pour the stones into the stream. If you want your streambed to look as if it dried up long ago, you can use rough stones. Or you can use smooth stones which I would recommend to make your streambed look as if it has been active recently.

So, that’s basically it. A good way to put those neglected part of the yard to good use.

Bathroom Works

The bathroom is a part of your home that needs constant attention.  Since the bathroom is almost wet all the time, there is the chance that it might get slippery and all that so you have to clean it occasionally.  That part is easy.  But redesigning your bathroom if it looks as if it needs renovation is no easy and cheap task right?  Actually, it is not as hard as some of us may think.  Or as expensive for that matter.

First off, consider the bathtub.  Being the largest object in the room, it always merits the most of your attention, or anyone entering your bathroom.  You might be thinking of throwing your old bathtub away and buying a new one, but hold your horses.  There is a way that you can make your bathroom look better without throwing that old bathtub away.  You can find bathtub specialists which can re-glaze your bathroom’s sink and bathtub.  This cost considerably lower than buying a new bathtub and paying for plumbers, tiles, and flooring contractors.  It is also faster to have a bathtub re-glazed than to have a new bathtub installed.

If your showerheads look ready to fall off, you can easily change them yourself.  You can buy bathroom fixtures from online stores or in your local hardware stores.  If you can turn off the water coming into your house, you can install new showerheads by yourself.  A change in showerheads can create miracles in changing the way you look at your bathroom.

That’s it for now guys. I hope you like this post.

Jazz Up Your Garden

I know summer is still a long way off but this is just to give you an idea how easy it is to create your own garden decors.  For this project, you will be creating a planter for vines just right for your porch.

So, first thing’s first, you have to wait for summer to come before using the resulting item outside.  But you can already create one today if you are looking to do something productive.   You will need yellow latex paint.  Yellow because it looks summer-y.  Also, it would be more appealing if you use two shades of yellow for that appealing shadow effect.  You would also need 16-ounce plastic measuring cup, two plastic mixing buckets two wooden tub planters, paintbrushes (of course) potting soil, six 6-foot bamboos sticks and three 3-4 foot sticks for the trellis, rope, raffia, and of course (again) summer vines.

Also, you will need some wooden boards for the backing. It is up to you how to design the boards.  Paint these boards in alternating color and let it dry.  Then, take the tub planters and fill it with potting soil. Once done, you can create the trellis by using the bamboo sticks. Use the shorter sticks to secure the longer sticks together. You can tie them up with rope too. Once done, wait for summer, take a table out in the garden, put the planters on top of the table and the backing boards at the back and plant fast growing summer vines.

That’s it, as simple project which can make your porch look more beautiful.

Furniture DIY

There are people that have the knack for assembling things.  If you are one of them and you are looking for new furniture, I think you would love it if you purchase a knock-down furniture and enjoy the challenge of assembling it.

These are actually called ready-to-assemble or RTA furniture, because they are ready to assemble and they are furniture.  Basically, when you buy a knock-down furniture set, you will get all the needed pieces and the directions for assembly.  Now, if you are a confident about your tinkering skills, you can defer from consulting the direction and just assemble the furniture using your common sense.

But if you are ultra confident, it would be a bigger challenge if you burn the direction, or feed it to a paper shredder or anything like that.emoticonJust kidding.

You can fully furnish your home from RTA furniture as there are a lot of choices out there.  You can purchase living room furniture, bookcases, tables, beds, chairs, outdoor furniture, swing sets, and others in the market.  Make sure though that you follow the instructions as you do not want to have your newly bought furniture ruined.

Also, keep in mind that you might need some tools like drills, screwdrivers, hammer, or Allen wrench so you should check if you have these before purchasing RTA furniture.
